NYCEDC & Weill Cornell Medicine – Academic Business Development Intern
The Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) at Weill Cornell Medicine is seeking up to two motivated and talented business development interns to join our team. The interns will work closely with CTL’s team of business development professionals to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of academic technology transfer and business development. During the internship, the interns will receive training in three core competencies: (i) Intellectual Property Protection, (ii) Technology Evaluation, and (iii) Partnering Academic Technologies. After training in each core competency, each intern will partner with a CTL team member to complete assignment(s) that directly support the protection and commercialization of Weill Cornell Medicine technologies. At the conclusion of the internship, the interns will have gained foundational skills for numerous career paths that sit at the intersection of business and science.

Purpose of the Position
Gain transferrable skills in academic business development and support CTL’s intellectual property management and commercial outreach activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review the prior art landscape of Cornell inventions to inform patentability and patent strategy
- Conduct market research to understand the unmet need, market size, and competitive landscape of Cornell inventions
- Prepare marketing collateral for active outreach campaigns, including executive summaries, pitch decks, and target lists
- Attend recurring IP and business development team meetings (schedule permitting)
Knowledge / Experience Required
- Working towards a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM field (preference for candidates enrolled in degree programs in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, medicine, or related fields)
- Completed introductory coursework in Biology and Biochemistry
- Prior laboratory research experience in a STEM field preferred but not required
- Preference will be given to candidates who have not already completed a comparable internship / course offered by their home institution
