Celebrate academic innovation and entrepreneurship while supporting Weill Cornell faculty participants in the 2026 Biomedical Innovation Challenge.

Join the Weill Cornell Medicine community in celebrating the culmination of the Biomedical Innovation Challenge — a premier, faculty-focused program advancing translational science and commercialization.

Over the course of this highly competitive 12-week program, participating teams engaged in expert-led seminars covering key elements of biomedical commercialization, including market and industry analysis, intellectual property strategy, R&D planning, regulatory pathways, manufacturing, business modeling, budgeting and fundraising, among other critical disciplines. Each team was also paired with experienced industry mentors to help shape their commercialization strategies.

The evening will begin with live presentations from the finalist teams, followed by judging from a distinguished panel of venture capital and industry leaders who will select the winning pitches.

Immediately following the pitch competition, please join us for a networking reception at the Belfer Research Building, 2nd floor, Skylight Lounge.

Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) at Weill Cornell Medicine Office Hours are open to all who wish to gain more information about the advancement of their patent filings and to discuss their technology venture project in a one-on-one meeting with a business development and licensing professional. The May office hours will be hosted by Jeff James, Ph.D., associate director, business development and licensing. 

Jeff has over 15 years of experience helping academic institutions to commercialize their early-stage inventions. Prior to joining CTL at Weill Cornell, he was associate director for licensing at the Penn Center for Innovation, University of Pennsylvania, where he managed commercialization activities in the life science space. He has also held positions as licensing manager at both the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University.

Morrison Foerster (MoFo) has developed a five-week virtual CGT seminar series designed specifically for academic innovators, founders, BD professionals and translational researchers.  

This is a practical, end-to-end overview of the CGT pathway, from discovery through commercialization, covering legal, regulatory, and business considerations that are often difficult to navigate in academic settings. Sessions are led by experts who regularly advise CGT companies and investors. Further information attached.

Key topics include:

  • Crafting strong patent strategies for CGT innovations
  • Moving from lab to license, including spinouts and partnerships
  • Fundraising fundamentals and IP diligence
  • Navigating FDA regulatory pathways for CGT products
  • Minimizing future litigation risks, including CRISPR-related considerations

Established in 1997, the WCGS Alumni Award of Distinction honors alumni who have made outstanding contributions in biomedical research and education across science, leadership, mentoring and service to society.  

Dr. Atherton is a leader at the intersection of biomedical law, global health and industry. She has held senior roles at Genzyme, Sanofi, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Commons Project, Chronomics, and Genentech and has built a distinguished career in science-informed leadership and innovation.  Join us for a conversation about her career journey, innovation, and advancing biomedicine.  

The event will be held at BioVenture eLab, 1157 York Ave, between 62nd and 63rd Streets, with the option to attend via Zoom.

In this conference course (June 1 - July 1), a select group of researchers working on biotechnology innovaion will "get out of their comfort zone" and talk to customers at the BIO International Convention to identify the best product-market fit. The course begins online and culminates with a trip to San Diego, CA for the 2026 BIO International ConventionUp to $5,000 (depending on team size) in travel reimbursement funding will be available for accepted teams*.   

You may apply with a team of 1-3 people. Teams may not split attendance between members. Please only include the members of your team that will be fully participating in the course. All team members are required to attend and participate fully in every course session and complete all coursework.
